Microantivirus2009 Only Wishes It Was Ahead of Its Time
One thing that malware programmers don’t seem to get is that dating your product a year ahead of its actual release only works for car manufacturers. Of course, maybe it’s not working so well for them, given the current state of that industry. At any rate, it’s too bad that seeing the name “Microsoftantivirus2009” doesn’t protect you from an infection.
At least with the knowledge that software doesn’t date its products like car makers do, maybe you’re more protected from identity theft. Actually, that’s the intent of this article. Foreknowledge won’t keep you from getting infected, but it can keep you from getting ripped off.
This program is fraudulent software. Specifically, it’s called a corrupt security tool. These programs pretend to be security programs that just happen to be there to help you when you get infected. There is no helpful software watching your Internet habits that isn’t already installed on your computer.
With that in mind, you will know immediately, should you get this infection, that the “warning screen” that pops up and tells you that you’re infected is suspicious. It’s unsolicited, so there’s another level of suspicion.
It will also show that it’s scanning your computer, and that you have probably thousands of infected files. If this was the case, you probably wouldn’t be able to surf the Internet to begin with. It’s actually counting your temporary files, which you may notice if you know what to look for.
Now, here’s the real kicker. It will tell you that it can remove these “infected files” if you pay for the full or registered version. Your Windows system can already delete all of your temporary files, free of charge, without any downloads.
However, your computer is actually infected at this point. Conveniently, it will redirect your browser to its home page. It will give you the option of accepting or declining the offer for its overpriced software. It’s the funniest thing, though. If you say “No,” it doesn’t go away.
If you do say “Yes,” it will direct you to a sales page, where you would enter your credit card information. If you’ve made it this far, this is where you absolutely should stop.
Submitting your credit card information will, at the very least, mean that you’ve paid twice what you needed to for a security tool, which, incidentally, doesn’t work. It is good at downloading more spyware, though. At worst, you will have just become a victim of identity theft. Say goodbye to your credit score.
